Rosseti identified 130 cases of illegal mining in Russia: The damage exceeded 1.3 billion rubles.
The Rosseti group of companies has published data on large-scale electricity for the extraction of cryptocurrencies. Since the beginning of the year, 130 cases of illegal connection to networks have been identified, 40 criminal cases have been initiated, and the total damage has exceeded 1.3 billion rubles.
Leading regions in terms of losses:
- North Caucasus – more than 600 million rubles.
- Novosibirsk – 400 million rubles.
- Central region and Volga region – 120 million rubles.
Major incidents:
- In the village of Chapaevskoye (Karachay-Cherkessia), a farm with 200 mining installations was discovered, requiring 12 thousand kWh.
- In Novosibirsk, thelargest farmwith 3.2 thousand devices was identified – the damage amounted to 197 million rubles. The equipment was located near landfills, treatment facilities and in the private sector.
Risks of illegal mining
According to energy experts, such farms overload the grid, causing power surges. For example, in the Irkutsk region, a farm was seized that consumed 2 mWh – the same as 150 private houses. The damage from this incident exceeded 12 million rubles
Regulatory measures
The government has approved aban on miningin certain regions from 2025 to 2031. The restrictions will affect the Irkutsk region, Buryatia and Transbaikalia during periods of peak energy consumption. It is noteworthy that the Novosibirsk region, despite record losses, was not included in the “forbidden” list.
What’s next?
Rosseti and law enforcement officers continue raids, focusing on unusual locations: containers, underground parking lots, rented areas. The company emphasizes that the theft of energy for mining has become an industrial business that requires systemic counteraction.
Earlier in February, a farm with130 devices connected to the network illegally was stopped in the Irkutsk region. The owner used overhead lines and transformers to bypass controls.
Key findings
- Illegal mining remains a serious problem for the Russian energy system.
- New regulatory measures may shift mining activity to regions without restrictions.
- Risks for infrastructure and consumers are growing: network congestion threatens the stability of energy supply.
