Mining in Belarus: Lukashenko instructed to develop the crypto industry

On March 21, 2025, it became known that Belarus is actively considering the development of cryptocurrency mining, using the excess capacity of its energy system. Chairman of the Mogilev Regional Executive Committee Anatoly Isachenko announced this after a report to President Alexander Lukashenko, Sputnik reports. The regional authorities are preparing sites for the construction of mining farms and data centers in order to attract investors.

Plans of the Mogilev region for the development of mining

Isachenko noted that in the Mogilev region there are sites with powerful energy infrastructure that are ideal for creating mining farms.

“We received the go-ahead from the president. Now we are preparing these sites to hold competitions and attract investors for construction,” he said.

The move aims to monetize excess electricity that can be sold for mining purposes.

Lukashenko’s position on cryptocurrency issues

At a meeting on March 4, Alexander Lukashenko instructed the Ministry of Energy to study the prospects for mining in the country.

“If it’s beneficial for us, let’s do it. We have excess electricity. Let them make this cryptocurrency,” said the Belarusian leader.

It is emphasized that the demand for cryptocurrencies in the world is growing, and Belarus should use this opportunity by attracting investors and selling them electricity. In my opinion, this is a pragmatic approach that can bring additional revenue to the country’s economy.

Investment in mining in Belarus

In 2024, construction of a mining farm began in the Krichevsky district with the participation of Chinese investors. Investments in the first phase of the project, which should be completed this year, amounted to 190 million rubles. This project was the first step in the development of mining infrastructure, and now the authorities intend to scale the initiative, especially in the Mogilev region.

Prospects for the economy

The development of mining could become a new source of income for Belarus, especially in conditions of excess electricity. I believe that attracting foreign investors and creating mining infrastructure will strengthen the country’s position in the global cryptocurrency market, although environmental aspects and energy consumption are important to consider.
