MetaMask launches its own stablecoin mUSD: a new tool for Web3

Innovations continue to emerge in the world of cryptocurrencies that make life easier for users. MetaMask, a popular self-custody crypto wallet owned by Consensys, has announced the launch of its own stablecoin called MetaMask USD (mUSD). This event is planned for 2025, and the token will first appear on the Ethereum blockchain and the Linea network – an Ethereum-based layer-2 developed by Consensys.mUSD will be backed by US dollars in a 1:1 ratio, which guarantees its stability. The stablecoin will be issued by the Bridge platform, which was recently acquired by the Stripe payment system, and liquidity will be provided by the M0 platform. Through integration with M0, mUSD supports cross-chain transactions, allowing you to easily move funds between different networks. One of the key advantages will be the full integration of mUSD into the MetaMask wallet.Users will be able to use it in various Web3 applications: for swaps, on-ramps, bridging, and even decentralized finance (DeFi) on Linea. In addition, the company plans to launch the MetaMask Card in partnership with Mastercard so that mUSD holders can spend their funds in everyday life – from in-store purchases to online payments. I think this move by MetaMask will make it much easier for newbies to enter the world of Web3, reducing costs and barriers. As noted by Gal Eldar, Product Manager at MetaMask, the stablecoin will help users easily transfer funds to the chain, invest in DeFi and use them in real life, making the entire process of self-storing crypto more convenient and accessible. This innovation highlights the growing role of stablecoins in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, where they serve as a bridge between traditional finance and decentralized technologies.
