IOTA Rebased: A New Path to Full Decentralization and Programmability

The IOTA Foundation (IOTA) has proposed a significant update to the IOTA protocol. The new protocol, called IOTA Rebased, will provide full decentralization, support for L1 programmability using MoveVM and EVM, scalability of over 50,000 TPS and staking of $IOTA tokens.

Main changes:

  • Full decentralization: Removal of central coordinator to ensure leadership consensus.
  • Scalability: Throughput over 50,000 transactions per second.
  • Programmability: MoveVM integration and support for EVM smart contracts.
  • Staking: The ability to earn income from storing IOTA tokens.

Update details

This update could be implemented faster than IOTA 2.0 plans. Following a community vote, a new mainnet could be launched following a phase of testing, security audits and integration with exchanges.

IOTA was founded almost 9 years ago with the goal of bringing blockchain technology to the real world. The main emphasis was on:

  • Refusal of miners and high energy costs.
  • Digitalization of the global economy using scalable DAG architecture.
  • Real implementation cases: in smart cities, logistics, energy and finance.

Key achievements of the ecosystem:

  • Finalist European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI).
  • Partnerships with governments and institutions, including the World Economic Forum.
  • Launch of digital wallets for sustainable energy consumption.

Why make the transition to IOTA Rebased

Today’s blockchain users expect infrastructure that “just works.” To provide:

  • Programmability and utility for creating new applications.
  • Accelerate time to market with enhanced L1 capabilities.

IOTA Rebased will create significant value for token holders and the ecosystem, helping to achieve greater adoption and utility.

What’s next

  • Community vote for adoption of IOTA Rebased.
  • Testing, audits and integrations.
  • Launch of a new main network and realization of the potential of L1 smart contracts.
