Polygon launched the AggLayer v1.0 mainnet: cross-chain settlements in 1 second combined the liquidity of ZK networks
The Polygon Labs team announced the official release of the first production version of the aggregation layer AggLayer v1.0 on the main network. The innovative infrastructure protocol is designed to eliminate the main structural vulnerability of the modern second-level (L2) architecture – critical fragmentation of liquidity, isolation of smart contracts and multi-minute delays in cross-chain communication. With the launch of version 1.0, dozens of networks built on the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), as well as the flagship Polygon PoS and Polygon zkEVM networks, are combined into a single cryptographic ecosystem, allowing users to interact with independent blockchains as if they were operating within a single super-blockchain.
How is the Pessimistic-Proofs architecture designed and why is it safer than bridges?
The central technological innovation of AggLayer v1.0 was the cryptographic concept of “Pessimistic Proofs”. In traditional multi-chain bridges, the compromise of one node jeopardizes the aggregate liquidity of all connected networks. AggLayer changes the security architecture:
- Mathematical risk isolation: The protocol a priori evaluates the state of each connected network as potentially untrusted. Pessimistic proof at the base level of Ethereum ensures that no connected rollup will be able to withdraw more assets from a common smart contract than were originally deposited by its users.
- Subsecond finalization: Thanks to the aggregation of lightweight zero-knowledge ZK proofs, transferring assets and invoking cross-chain contracts between ecosystem networks now takes less than 1 second instead of waiting for long minutes for confirmations.
- Atomic cross-chain transactions:DeFi developers have the opportunity to create protocols that perform instant arbitration and liquidation transactions simultaneously on multiple networks without the risk of capital getting stuck in cross-chain bridges.
What does launching AggLayer mean for users and POL-token?
Full-scale implementation of a single aggregation layer radically simplifies the user experience in the Web3 sector:
- Seamless liquidity without splitting: Users see a single balance of stablecoins and tokens across all connected networks without having to manually switch RPCs in wallets or store each blockchain’s native gas.
- Reduced cross-chain fees:Direct cryptographic state consistency checking has reduced the cost of cross-chain transactions to fractions of a cent, eliminating the markups of commercial bridge operators.
- Utilitarian incentive for the POL token:The updated ecosystem token POL (formerly MATIC) has become the underlying collateral asset for AggLayer validators, which provide generation and continuous validation of ZK proofs in real time.
